Timing belt marks
- TDI. 1.9TDI. Feb 16, 2010. #1. I bought an ALH for a swap and sold the transmission and the dual mass flywheel. But now, I want to change the timing belt and I have an issue with the TDC timing mark, since the flywheel is removed and even if I find a flywheel, I don't have the transmission for the hole into the bellhousing.
- When you loosen the bolt on the tensioner (the middle cog you loosened and retightened to remove the timing belt) it will drop back into its original position, re-tensioning the new belt. Make sure the cogs still line up with the white marks you made earlier now the timing belt is in place and tight.
- Check the cam timing marks. Reinstall the tensioner arm and tensioner, and run the tensioner bolt up to snug the belt. With the belt removed , remove and replace the water pump . Coat the gasket with a little RTV silicone and clean the gasket mating surface well. Install the new timing belt in the opposite direction as removed . Make sure that all the timing marks are lined up . Reinstall the timing belt tensioner.If not, carefully rock the pulley until the marks line up. Double check that the marks on the camshaft sprocket align with the marks on the cylinder head. Thread the timing belt around the camshaft sprocket as described in your manual. Apply pressure to the belt by moving the tensioner into the belt.
